When is it too late to spray dormant oil?
Dormant oils should be applied in late March or early April before the plants show signs of breaking dormancy (before “bud break”). Dormant oils applied in February or early March are not effective as insects are not actively respiring at this time and, therefore, are not vulnerable to the oil's suffocating effects.
Apply in early morning or late afternoon, and avoid spraying on days that temperatures above 90 degrees are expected. The ideal temperature range for application is between 40 and 70 degrees, with the day of application expected to stay above 50 for at least 24 hours.
A true “dormant spray” would be applied before bud break -- before growth starts. A “delayed-dormant spray” is applied after bud break and up to flowering.
Treat at the beginning of dormancy in late November and again just before the buds begin to open in February or early March. One way to remember when to consider dormant spraying is to do so around Thanksgiving time and Valentine's Day.
After pruning your trees, you may want to consider applying a dormant-oil spray to kill insect eggs and larvae overwintering on the twigs and bark of your trees.
How much Hi-Yield Dormant Spray Oil do I use per gallon of water? Per the Dormant Oil product label: Ornamentals: 3 tablespoons (1. 5 oz.) per gallon of water.
Summer Oil – Oil applied when plants are in leaf at a lower concentration than dormant oil. Sometimes called superior oils. Refers to season of application. Superior Oil – Oil that doesn't contain sulfur and can be applied when plants are in leaf.
The idea was to kill off icky overwintering pests like mites and aphids. Horticultural oils are a good alternative to traditional insecticides as they are safe for humans, they are largely safe for wildlife, and they don't tend to have too much of an effect on the more beneficial bugs like honey bees and ladybugs.
It can be used as a dormant-season application or a foliar spray. Since neem oil can kill insects at varying stages, you can use it as a dormant-season application to kill overwinter pests and eggs or as a foliar spray to repel and kill insects.
After bud dormancy is broken by adequate chilling, apically produced growth-promoting hormones move down the branches and stem and provide the stimulus for initiation of seasonal cambial growth.
Is neem oil same as dormant oil?
Horticultural oil and neem oil are naturally-derived oils that used to be referred to as dormant oil. Mineral oils and vegetable oils like canola oil, cottonseed oil, and soybean oil are all classified as horticultural and can be used in the garden to prevent pests and diseases.
To begin spraying, the weather must be above freezing. Dormant oil should be applied in late February or throughout the month of March. This treatment can be sprayed on to all trees and bushes that are not considered blue, such as Spruce or Juniper trees. The only exception to this rule is Pine trees.

Early spring dormant applications of some miscible oils have caused injury to peach trees, especially those in a low state of vigor. Do not apply oil when rain or snow is likely to follow quickly, or when the temperature is below 40° F, or is likely to drop to the freezing point before the spray has thoroughly dried.
Dormant oils should be applied in late March or early April before the plants show signs of breaking dormancy (before “bud break”). Dormant oils applied in February or early March are not effective as insects are not actively respiring at this time and, therefore, are not vulnerable to the oil's suffocating effects.
Generally, the best time to prune or trim trees and shrubs is during the winter months. From November through March, most trees are dormant which makes it the ideal time for the following reasons: Trees are less susceptible to insects or disease.
The rule on fall pruning is, generally speaking, don't prune in fall. But there are a few trimming tasks you can take on with confidence, provided you approach the job with self-control and a plan. The timing window for these pruning chores is from Thanksgiving to the New Year.
How long should 100 gallons of heating oil last? Using the calculation above, 1.7 gallons per hour x 10 hours a day (assuming the number of hours you spend at home is 10 hours) = 17 gallons a day. That means, 100 gallons of oil will last you about six days (100-gallon tank / 17 gallons per day = 5.8 days).
Tank size: 275 gallons (holds 250) Reorder point: 1/4 tank or 68 gallons. Usable gallons between fills: 250-68 = 182 gallons. Number of Days Between Fills: 182 gallons / 5.2 gallons/day = 35 days.
How Long Will 1/8 Tank of Heating Oil Last? Typical home oil tanks will fill to 245 gallons, so 1/8 tank will supply about 31 gallons of oil. At 40 degrees F outside temperature, 1/8 tank will last you 2-4 days ( your furnace won't likely be running 100% of that time and, again, there are many variables involved).
So if you had problems last year with aphids, scale, or spider mites, dormant oil is a great way to help you get a handle on the insect problem before it starts this year. More good news: dormant oil spray is less toxic to beneficial insects like ladybugs than other types of insecticide.
Which plants don t like neem oil?
Neem oil shouldn't be used on herbs such as basil, caraway, cilantro, dill, marjoram, oregano, parsley, or thyme. Spraying neem oil on plants with delicate or wispy leaves, such as arugula, lettuce, peas, and spinach, should be done with caution because it can cause foliage burns.
Never spray when trees are blooming in order not to harm pollination insects, and do not spray within 2 weeks of harvest. Use when fruit plants are dormant and temperatures are above 40 degrees and before dormant oil spray.
While plant-safe under the right conditions, horticultural oil can cause phytotoxicity (plant tissue damage, especially on foliage) if applied during high heat or when evaporation is reduced due to cloudy, rainy, or very humid weather.
Spraying of Dormant Oils
What is dormant oil? It's an oil based product, typically petroleum but can also be vegetable oil based, especially designed for use on fruit trees. This oil has had surfactants mixed in to enable it to be mixed with water.
During dormant sprays, it is okay to mix oil and copper. Since minimal green tissue is present, the risk of phytotoxicity from the copper-oil mix is very low. Consequently, emergence of green tissue will want to be monitored when this combination spray is used.
Don't use during extreme cold or hot temperatures. Refrain from using neem oil if plants are stressed due to over or underwatering, or after transplanting to avoid shock. Avoid spraying new seedlings, which can be sensitive to foliage burn.
Can you leave neem oil on overnight? A. Neem oil is potent, therefore leaving it overnight on your skin can cause irritation. You can apply it for one to two hours and wash it off with lukewarm water or use diluted oil.
How often should you apply neem oil for plants? You should apply it around one or two times a week to get the acute infestation under control. If you just want to prevent your plants from any pests, you can use the neem oil every 7- to 14 days.
Treatment. After bud rot has set in, there's not much you can do to reverse the spread of the fungus. If you notice a section of your garden has bud rot, there's a strong possibility that the rest of your garden is infected too. To prevent the fungus from spreading, remove all infected plants.
Soaking seeds in warm water for up to 24 hours is one way to break dormancy and get seeds to germinate faster. Seeds with thinner seed coats should be soaked for 12 hours or less.
What is the difference between seed dormancy and bud dormancy?
A common fea- ture displayed by these organs is reduced growth; in seeds, growth of the embryo is blocked, whereas in buds and other organs, growth of the shoot apical meristem is inhibited. generally considered necessary for growth is known as dormancy, and such organs are said to be dormant.
Jojoba oil is more effective against a range of unwanted guests that can harm your plants. It is less aggressive to plants and less likely to damage them compared to neem oil. Provides more consistent positive results across a variety of plant species. It also doesn't smell as bad as neem oil which has a strong odor.
Neem oil can be slightly irritating to the eyes and skin. Azadirachtin, a component of neem oil, can be very irritating to the skin and stomach. The remaining portion of neem oil is made of fatty acids, essential oils and other substances that are commonly eaten in a normal diet.
Apply the mixture to your plants.
Use a foliar spray bottle to apply your neem oil mixture to one small section of your plants. Wait twenty-four hours. If there is no damage from the mixture, you can then thoroughly mist your indoor and outdoor plants, spraying directly onto plant leaves.
Dormant oil may be applied when the temperature is at least 40 degrees and there is no chance of freezing within 24 hours.
Linseed oil is one of the best oils to use for wood finishes because it penetrates deep into the grain of the wood, giving it a rich color and protecting it against moisture. If you want to clean your wood furniture with linseed oil, make sure to dilute it first with water.
Neem oil will not readily combine with water and needs an emulsifying agent, like a mild dish detergent, to effectively mix the oil. Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of dish detergent to 1 gallon of warm (not hot or cold) water in your sprayer. Mix thoroughly.
Delayed-dormant sprays are designed for use just after the buds begin to swell, but before the trees start to leaf out or flower. This usually occurs in late March to early April. Dormant oils should not be used when the tree is in flower, since they can be deadly to pollinators.
Apply neem in the evening or on a cloudy day when there is no direct light to avoid having the foliage burn and to allow time for the oil to seep into the plant.
Southern AG Triple Action Neem Oil is most effective when applied in early to mid-morning or late afternoon. It should be applied when rain is not expected within 24 hours of application. Leaves should not be dripping from rain or watering before applying to ensure the product makes good contact and does not run off.
Is dormant oil harmful to birds?
The sprays are safe to most mammals and birds and are unlikely to harm beneficial insects because the spray is applied when they are not active on the tree. Dormant oils are quick drying, and do not leave a harmful residue.
Dormant and resting plants will droop, their leaves will sometimes turn yellow and drop, and they won't put on any new growth. If you're still not sure, you can try the scratch and snap test. Scratch a little off the surface of a mature stem, and if it's green inside, it's still alive.
Most importantly, if you make pruning cuts at the wrong time–even good cuts that avoid the most common mistakes described here–you risk leaving your plants and trees susceptible to disease pathogens that are airborne or transmitted through insects.
Removing too many lower branches all at once can result in a weak tree. Remove only a few limbs less than 4 inches in diameter when pruning every year. I like to take a few steps back periodically and look at the overall balance of the tree. The live crown on deciduous trees should make up 60 percent of the tree.

If you want to prune in fall, wait until trees drop their leaves and are dormant—usually October or November. After leaf drop, you can see the tree's structure and identify disease and insect problems more easily.
Also, do not cut back hardy perennials like garden mums (Chrysanthemum spp.), anise hyssop (Agastache foeniculum), red-hot poker (Kniphofia uvaria), and Montauk daisy (Nipponanthemum nipponicum). Leave the foliage. It's important to protect the root crowns over winter.

Can you use dormant oil on evergreens?
Dormant oils should be applied to deciduous plants when the ambient temperature will stay above freezing for at least 24 hours. Evergreens are more susceptible to damage, so applications are safe when temperatures stay above 40 F over a 24-hour period.
Southern AG Triple Action Neem Oil is most effective when applied in early to mid-morning or late afternoon. It should be applied when rain is not expected within 24 hours of application.
Don't use during extreme cold or hot temperatures. Refrain from using neem oil if plants are stressed due to over or underwatering, or after transplanting to avoid shock. Avoid spraying new seedlings, which can be sensitive to foliage burn.
Neem is possibly unsafe when taken by mouth in large doses or for long periods of time. It might harm the kidneys and liver. When applied to the skin: Neem oil or cream is possibly safe when applied to the skin for up to 2 weeks.
How often should you apply neem oil for plants? You should apply it around one or two times a week to get the acute infestation under control. If you just want to prevent your plants from any pests, you can use the neem oil every 7- to 14 days.
Aim to apply neem oil in the early morning or late evening. Beneficial insects are usually less active at these times, making them less likely to come in contact with the pesticide.
Apples, crabapples, plums, quince, and pears all benefit from dormant oil, as do gooseberry and currant bushes. Other fruit-bearing trees and bushes don't have any need for spraying of dormant oils, as they don't often harbor the same pests, but it won't hurt to do so if desired.
Neem oil is a naturally occurring pesticide found in seeds from the Neem tree (Azadirachta indica). While Neem Oil has a very low acute toxicity rating for people and other mammals, it can be toxic to bees if not properly applied.
